I have a few questions about certain things in the movie.

Kinja'd!!!

I'd like to know if a few of these things happened or if it was Hollywood.

1) Did Lauda's helmet really come off in the crash and was the crash a result of a broken suspension piece as implied by the camera shots that kept returning to his suspension as he was pushing the car?

2) Did a reporter really ask Lauda if he thought his marriage could survive the way he looks now?

3) Did James Hunt really beat the shit out of that reporter?

4) Did Lauda really retire from the Japanese Grand Prix due to safety concerns?

5) This one I don't feel like I need to ask, but did Hunt go from 1st to 5th late in the Japanese GP due to tire failure, stop and then claw back 2 spots on the final lap? Did the rain really let up significantly on the final lap?

Unrelated to my questions it would have been nice to have a big fuck you scene with Lauda and his father. Given Lauda's personality I suspect he would not have hesitated to say I told you so.

I'll answer what I can off the top of my head.

1. Yes.
2. Don't know
3. Don't know
4. My memory of what happened was that Lauda stopped because he couldn't see. One of the things I noticed about the movie was that while they did a good job recreating the damage to Lauda's head, the actor still had eyelashes and eyelids. I believe that Lauda's eyelids were injured in the fire, which was one of the reasons he ultimately withdrew from the race at Fuji.
5. Don't know. All I remember (from reading accounts, I was six when these events happened) was that Lauda's withdrawal handed Hunt the championship.

My question is:

How drunk was Hunt to have to ask "Who's that?" about the 1975 Word Champion he raced against the previous year?

Haven't' seen the movie yet, but that part in the trailer annoys me every time.

That question was posed during his formula 3 days. The first time he ever raced against Lauda.

My Google-Fu suggests that 2 happened though not exactly like it did in the movie and that 3 could have happened, but nobody has any direct knowledge of if it did or didn't happen.

Thanks, I was hoping that was the case.

I just saw it this weekend, and really enjoyed the movie. Definitely showed the contrast of the two men. The quiet, slow scene where they both decided to go ahead with the clearly dangerous Japanese GP race really got across the gravity of those decisions back then. They truly were putting their lives on the line every time they went out there. How many of today's drivers would accept Lauda's "acceptable" 20% odds?

I didn't know the final result of that season, and I'm glad I kept myself in the dark prior to watch the movie. Definitely going to have to get the DVD for all the extras. I sure hope #3 is actually true.

Here's the real footage. Hunt is in the pits at 6:20 with a flat

That's annoying. Seems they took a lot of liberties with the japanese grand prix. What position was Lauda in when he retired? What position was Hunt in when he came out of the pits? What lap did Hunt pit on?

Looks like they got the weather conditions mostly right. They nailed the shot of the 9 car spinning next to Hunt. They had Andretti higher up than he was at the start which is odd.

Some info here: http://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/rush…

Sounds like their account of the Japanese GP was fairly accurate. I had remembered that Hunt thought he lost the championship when the race ended.

This video is pretty informative as well:
